No call to sql functions and commands



I have entered the CLI to begin sql database creation but my terminal wont let me call commands just gives me the following when i try. Can anyone explain the reason why?

bbelfort:~/workspace $ mysql-ctl start

    bbelfort:~/workspace $ mysql-ctl cli

mysql> ‘help;’
-> show database
-> create database


Have you tried adding a semicolon after a line? -> show database;
