The Atom Editor has a really useful feature called git gutter.

Marks lines in the editor gutter that have been added, edited, or deleted since the last commit.

100% agree. This is a great feature to have.

Just moved from NetBeans and I really miss this feature!

I definitely agree that C9 needs to compete better with Atom, even in these very simple and basic ways.

One helpful tool I just discovered to help deal with some of the lack of built-in tooling is called ungit. It works on C9 as described here: http://root-project.org/2014/07/09/work/ungit-on-cloud9/
