Error running IDLE from command line on Python workspace

#1

I installed idle 3 on my python workspace using the following steps:

$ sudo apt-get update

$ sudo apt-get install idle3 (first time around, I tried “idle” instead of “idle3”, with the same results)

It appears to install fine, but when I attempt to invoke it from the command line using the keyword “idle3” I get the following error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File “/usr/bin/idle3”, line 5, in
main()
File “/usr/lib/python3.4/idlelib/PyShell.py”, line 1535, in main
root = Tk(className=“Idle”)
File “/usr/lib/python3.4/tkinter/init.py”, line 1854, in init
self.tk = _tkinter.create(screenName, baseName, className, interactive, wantobjects, useTk, sync, use)
_tkinter.TclError: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable

Any help is greatly appreciated!
