Emoji output in console/terminal varies based on local machine

I’m building a Java application that outputs emoji characters to the command line console/ terminal using surrogate pair UTF-8 print statements. However, I noticed I get very different emoji representations depending on which browser and which OS that I’m using to log into Cloud9. Is the emoji character set that displays in the Cloud9 terminal dependent on the configuration of my local machine? If so, is there as way to configure Cloud9 to display a consistent set of emojis.

Emoji are indeed tied to a UTF character so they’ll be different depending on what platform you’re using. Have a look at this blog post and you might be able to rig up a hack around that implementation and the SDK for Cloud9 plugin development.
