Downloading files from the Internet directly from Cloud9

I am running Cloud9 from a BeagleBone Green board and am experiencing problems accessing files on the Internet. How do I check if my Cloud9 environment can reach the Internet and download files? Right now, it looks to be blocked. Here is an example command that has failed:

root@beaglebone:/var/lib/cloud9/examples/aws-iot-device-sdk-js/awsCerts# npm install npm@latest -g
npm ERR! network tunneling socket could not be established, cause=getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND

More information. The Cloud9 terminal cannot reach the network:

root@beaglebone:/var/lib/cloud9# ping
connect: Network is unreachable

This is running from a BeagleBone Green board with the IDE running here:

How do I open this up to the Internet so I can download external files and packages?

Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated! I dont know how to make my Cloud9 workspace connect to the broader Internet without error.

this is not related to cloud9, cloud9 only provides the ui for the terminal, for network issues try searching beaglebone related forums
